A Certificate of Analysis from a lab accredited to it carries more weight, because the lab's methods, quality system, and results have been independently assessed rather than self-asserted. A COA is only as trustworthy as the lab that produced it, and accreditation is the clearest signal that the lab has been checked by someone other than itself. ISO/IEC 17025 is not a rubber stamp on a building; it is an assessment of whether a laboratory can competently produce valid results. An accreditation body evaluates, among other things:

  • The certificate should identify the testing lab, not just assert a pass. A COA that names an accredited, in-scope lab is a stronger document than one from an unnamed or unaccredited source.
